Description of Technology and Product Line

Bokam's award winning force measurement product line consists of a solid stainless steel sensor with an elaborate miniature network of conductive steel imbedded strain-sensitive materials arranged in a Whetstone Bridge architecture in one, two or three axis. Unlike conventional strain gauge based designs these products are based on Bokam's proprietary technology that allows us to imbed the strain sensitive materials onto the steel surface without the use of organic materials such as epoxies or the like.  The construction of the sensor is such that it is by its design sealed from the environments and the only surface that comes in contact with the outside world is the stainless steel surface.

The strain-sensitive materials on the back of the sensor are capable of detecting even microscopic strain in the sensor base, and resolve the applied force into distinct multiple outputs proportional to the X, Y and Z component of the force vector.

The elastic nature of the steel surface and the absence of a bond or glue line between the strain-sensitive materials and stainless steel surface yield a virtually indestructible device that does not require re-calibration for the life of the OEM system after initial installation.

General Functionality

The sensor is a three dimensional force measurement device.  The body of the sensor is machined from a solid piece of steel

Figure 1:  Cross-section of Sensor Body

In the middle of the sensor body there is a cavity with a post in the  middle.  The post contains a threaded hole.  This post serves as the force input device.  Force is applied to the post either directly or through an extension rod screwed into the post.

Figure 2:  X/Y Force Input Magnified Deflection

Figure 3:  Z Force Input Magnified Deflection

When an X, Y, or Z force is applied onto the sensor the diaphragm microscopically deflect creating a change in signal from the strain sensitive bridge.  Figure 2 and Figure 3 represents a grossly exaggerated deflection of the leaves during force application.
