Description of Technology and Product Line

Evolving from the best characteristics of Bokam's award-winning imbeded, strain sensitive technology, the Motion control product line  offers products ranging from large robust palm activation systems to tiny, yet robust devices that are a more economical and reliable alternative to conventional multi-axis proportional joy sticks.

Originally developed for stringent military and industrial man-machine interface applications, the product lines ruggedness, long cycle life and water resistance (The device has even been demonstrated working while submerged in boiling water) make it an ideal input device for cursor and motion control in OEM packages as diverse as medical equipment, military, industrial and other ruggedized man-machine interface packages, test and measurement instrumentation, and other motion control systems.

General Functionality

The sensor is in principle a three dimensional force measurement device.  The body of the sensor is machined from a solid piece of steel.

Figure 1:  Cross-section of Sensor Body

In the middle of the sensor body there is a cavity with a post containing a tapped hole.  This allows the customer to interface any application specific input post or handle configuration.  The X and Y coordinates of the sensor are in plane with the diaphragm the Z axis is aligned along the central axis of the post.  The sensor contains imbedded strain sensitive artwork located on the bottom surface of the sensor.

Figure 2:  X/Y Force Input Magnified Deflection

Figure 3:  Z Force Input Magnified Deflection

When an X, Y, or Z force is applied onto the sensor the diaphragm microscopically deflect creating a change in signal from the strain sensitive bridge.  Figure 2 and Figure 3 represents a grossly exaggerated deflection of the leaves during force application. The relationship between the change in output is linear and proportional which allow the input device to control both the position of an object and also its rate of motion.  Due to the rugged nature and force sensor basis of the technology and design the input device allows not only precision motion control but in a package with a life expectancy longer than that of the OEM unit it is used in.
